American people will see Trump’s tax return, senior House Democrat predicts

Democrats in the House will obtain a copy of President Trump’s tax returns now that they control the chamber, a member of the party’s leadership in the chamber predicted Wednesday.

“The American people will see his tax returns, not because of any voyeuristic interest but because they should know if he’s corrupt,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat of California, in an interview on NBC News’ “Today Show.”

Democrats will also probe issues such as “cashing in on access to the Oval Office” and the president’s “financial entanglements overseas,” Swalwell said. The party also wanted to “fill in the blanks” of the probe of Russia investigations, he added.

Swalwell is a member of the House Democratic caucus’ leadership team, as co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

Swalwell said the investigations of the president are not the caucus’ top priority.

“We’re not going to lead with the investigations but we’re not going to look the other way,” he said.

Democrats are willing to work with Trump on boosting infrastructure spending and passage of the DREAM Act focusing on children of immigrants, as well as revisiting firearms background checks and reducing the cost prescription drugs, he said.

These are all areas that Trump has said over the past two years that he supported but Congressional Republicans never brought legislation forward, Swalwell said

In a tweet, Trump said any new probes would be a waste of taxpayer money. He also warned House Democrats that Republicans would not remain passive throughout any new probes. He suggested Senate Republicans would investigate House Democrats.
